Almost 1 in 4 Irish Workers Took Mental Health Leave Last Year

Last week, new data revealed that the number of patients who had been on the waiting list for public counselling had increased more the 40% in the last year.

Nearly one in four workers in Ireland took time off for their mental health last year, a stat that’s well above the European average. A new survey from SD Worx Ireland reveals that pressure, stress, and burnout are weighing heavily on employees, with half of those surveyed describing their jobs as mentally demanding.

29% say their workplace negatively affects their mental health. One upside of the study was that 45% were not suffering in silence and did feel comfortable talking about these struggles with colleagues, but almost the same number admit they feel guilty taking time off. 29% of respondents also say they still feel pressure to work through illness.

Public mental health supports in Ireland are under strain and oversubscribed. Last week, new data revealed that the number of patients who had been on the waiting list for public counselling had increased more the 40% in the last year.
