The Trainspotting director has been attached to a hip-hop dance adaptation of the Wachowski‘s mind-bending sci-fi thriller The Matrix
The range of director Danny Boyle is seemingly limitless. While always touting a sense of dark humour, the 65 year old director is the man behind Trainspotting, 28 Days Later and the brutally honest Steve Jobs biopic starring Michael Fassbender.
It’s been announced that director Boyle will be unleashing a dance musical entitled ‘Free Your Mind’, based on the 1999 blockbuster the Matrix. Set to debut at new Manchester arts venue Factory International, the musical will retell the story through hip-hop choreography by Kendrick ‘H20’ Sandy and music my Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante. The ‘Bullet-Dodge’ scene should be an interesting one.
“Combining the hip-hop choreography of hundreds of dancers with the latest immersive design, ‘Free Your Mind’ will take audiences on a thrilling journey through ‘The Matrix’ and into a new realm of possibilities.”
The new musical is set to begin in October of next year following on from an art installation by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. While Danny Boyle has directed musicals before like the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire and the enormous spectacle at the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony, this is an unusual choice.
Let’s hope this one goes down better than the Spider-Man musical.
