District Mixtape Series: Plant Food – ‘organisms’

“I try to make each track feel like it’s exploring some weirdo alien space…”

Next up in our mixtape series we’re proud to release enigmatic producer Plant Food’s new project ‘organisms’.

Here’s what he had to say about the wonderfully weird tape:

“There were a lot of ups and downs during the process of getting this tape together. I spent months working on specific tracks planning an official EP release but kept hitting walls, and more importantly being unsatisfied with the results of the music.

“The beats on ‘organisms’ came around much more naturally, while I was playing around with new techniques and trying new things. I try to make each track feel like it’s exploring some weirdo alien space, so I felt like the experimentation with the production really added layers to that concept for me.”

Plant Food’s first aim was to work in the film industry, which is apparent in the cinematic elements throughout this tape.

“It was something that grabbed my attention after hearing Flying Lotus talking about his records. Textures, sound design, stereo imaging, unusual percussion and futuristic sample/synth treatment have all been key points of development for the sound I’ve been chasing, and I think ‘organisms’ is the closest I’ve come to actually nailing it down.”

He’s also no stranger to the Irish hip hop community, having worked with Ganiyu TLG and Huva on ‘Shivers‘ back in January.

“It’s amazing to watch the scene in Ireland really start to bloom the way it has the past few years. I’ve been lucky enough to work with some of the talent we’re churning out these days, but it really feels like it’s just the beginning. I think we still have a way to go, but I believe at this point it’s just a matter of time before Ireland has its own identifiable homegrown sound that will really put us on the map. Until then it’s all about propping each other up!”

As always it’s free to download the tape and we encourage MCs to send in the tracks to us with some bars. Click here to grab the mixtape.
