Donegal Ranked Fourth Best Place In The World To Visit

Text: Izzy Copestake

The secret’s out.

Lonely Planet have ranked Donegal the fourth best region to visit in 2024, and we aren’t surprised. The county has Ireland’s longest coastline, with over 100 beaches to choose from, and Europe’s highest sea cliffs.

Donegal is known for its unspoiled, dramatic natural landscape, but Lonely Planet also credits the area’s ‘musical traditions and rich heritage of the Irish language’ for its position so high up the list. The region was only beaten to the top spot by Tuscany, Kangaroo Island in Southern Australia, and the Western Balkans’ Trans Dinarica Cycling Route.

The big news comes just a couple of days after the launch of the Donegal – It’s Not Yours, It’s Ours campaign. The tongue-in-cheek tourism videos in collaboration with Donegal comedian Eric Roberts, depict the local’s attempts to keep the breathtaking region a secret from visitors.

But they’re only messing. It’s high time Donegal was recognised as one of the best places on the planet to plan a visit.
