When we think of the biggest names in jazz, who do you think of? Behind behemoths of the sound such as John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk or Miles Davis are some of the most talented and subversive musicians. These musicians are still here today, preserving and progressing jazz and touring. Marilyn Mazur is one of them.
Those from the outside looking in, may perceive jazz as dominated by the tenor saxophone and trumpet. However, jazz runs so much deeper with the beauty of the genre being so transferable to any instrument. Marilyn Mazur is a world-renowned percussionist embarking on a tour of Ireland, alongside accompanying artists of an equally high calibre.
Exploring the unconventional side of jazz feels the reverberation of gongs, bells, and the whole spectrum of percussion. Bringing five decades of experience to the stage and working alongside the figures who shaped jazz culture, her tour hits Dún Laoghaire, Dublin, Donegal and Cork this October.
Described as “music creating that created aura in which time stops, carrying us away to mysterious places”. Marilyn and her ‘Special Four’ sculpt a truly transcendental sound which is able to take you to a place that only jazz can do. If you think you’re not a jazz fan, then you haven’t listened to jazz.
The wonderful and bizarre will be on display, showing the edge of alternativism in the jazz world. The tour starts on 22nd October in The Pavilion in Dun Laoghaire, then to the Sugar Club in Dublin on 23rd October, before heading to the Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny on 24th and finishing in Triskel Christchurch who present Marilyn Mazur Special 4 in association with Guinness Cork Jazz Festival.
