Dublin is Getting a New Town With 6,000 Houses

6,000 new homes are set to be built on a 770,000 square metre area of land between Cabra, Glasnevin and Finglas as part of the creation of a new town Baile Bogáin (Ballyboggan). The area promises to foster both residential and business opportunities with the land being split 3:1 between the former and latter.

At the forefront of the project are various quality of life goals such as maximising clean energy use, no poverty and zero hunger. The council promises measures such as green roofs, green walls, sustainable sewage systems and infrastructure promoting biodiversity.

Essential to the project is the introduction of open public space. Dublin City Council have pledged 10-15% of the land redeveloped to be dedicated “to be provided as open public space”. Added to this is cycle and walk-friendly green corridors across the canal, as well as promising “Plazas and streets that provide for multi-functional uses and meeting spaces throughout the public realm”. The council have also made a “movement hierarchy” prioritising walking and cycling over vehicles.

“The Masterplan lands will continue to be a significantly valuable employment location for the city. The area will be an attractive location for new businesses seeking a qualified and skilled workforce and also a place where people will want to live and to socialise. This will be supported through the creation of attractive urban environments with the potential for job opportunities across a range of high value sectors.”
