J. Cole uses a YouTube type beat for his new surprise drop ‘Procrastination’

Words: Dylan Murphy

In the new song, the Dreamville rapper glides over a “J. Cole type beat” he found on YouTube.

Type beats are nothing new in rap. Thanks to the internet and the magic of SEO, as an artist you can find the type of vibe you need in an instant. However, last night, J. Cole flipped the script and revealed a new song called ‘Procrastination’. In a message that appears as the song’s artwork he admits that he searched “J. Cole Type Beat” in a search for inspiration in the midst of a creative rut.

“On a day when I couldn’t find much motivation, I was looking for anything to inspire me. Out of curiosity, I typed in ‘J. Cole Type Beat’ into YouTube. Yours was the first I saw. I pressed play, focused and wrote this”, he said in a message to the producer bvtman.

As a symbol of his gratitude to bvtman, the Dreamville head honcho told him to post the song on his own YouTube channel. The text reads: “This song should live on your channel and serve as a thank you to you and every producer out there cooking up and sharing their work with the world.”

“This song should live on your channel and serve as a thank you to you and every producer out there cooking up and sharing their work with the world. It’s a million artists out there right now just like me, hungry and searching every day for something to spark a word, a melody, a hook, a verse, a punchline, a way to vent, or a way to CUT THROUGH. On a day when I couldn’t find much motivation, I was looking for anything to inspire me. Out of curiosity, I typed in ‘J. Cole type beat’ into YouTube. Yours was the first I saw. I pressed play, focused, and wrote this. This is some shit that would normally stay in the vault, but I don’t want to hold onto the music like that no more. This is for you and whoever else need to hear it. God bless bro and keep doing what you do!”

The loosie comes after Cole guest featured on St. Louis rapper Smino’s new album and BIA’s London among other singles in 2022. J. Cole’s last full length album dropped in 2021, but he does admit there’s one in the works in the lyrics of this latest release.

Producers, this is your new year’s motivation to keep creating.
