Jonathan Anderson Is The Sole Creative Director Of Dior

The fashion industry has been teasing us with this one.

The rumour that Derry-born Irish designer Jonathan Anderson was heading to Dior was the worst-kept secret in fashion. So when his departure from Loewe and appointment as Dior’s menswear designer in April were confirmed, it came as no surprise. But yesterday, Anderson made history: he was named sole creative director at Dior, now overseeing menswear, womenswear, and haute couture, making him arguably the most prolific (and busiest) designer in the industry.

Becoming the sole creative director of any fashion house, let alone one as prestigious and with a legacy as long as Dior, is an immense undertaking for any designer. But this won’t be Jonathan Anderson’s only job. In addition to designing four women’s collections, four men’s collections, and two haute couture collections annually at Dior, he will also continue to create four collections for his eponymous label, JW Anderson, as well as two collections for JW Anderson x Uniqlo.

The scale is utterly staggering, even by fashion’s increasingly excessive standards. Anderson has been compared by critics to the greats in fashion’s legacy, rivals both in terms of sheer scale and innovation. Galliano may have brought theatricality and classic romance to Dior, and Lagerfeld famously juggled Chanel, Fendi, and his namesake brand, but Anderson’s new workload e both in sheer volume. Chair and chief executive of Dior, Delphine Arnault described Anderson as “the most talented designer of his generation”, and his workload is reflecting this. It’s a modern-era feat of creative stamina, positioning him not just as a huge designer, but as the designer of today.
