Jordan Peele’s latest trailer for ‘Candyman’ uses puppets to highlight racial injustice

Another trailer cleverly soundtracked calling on the supernatural killer in the mirror with Destiny’s Child’s ‘Say My Name’.

Director and writer Jordan Peele is working as a producer on the sequel of horror film ‘Candyman’. Having already been heavily involved in films such as ‘Get Out’ and ‘Us’, he’s teamed up with director Nia DaCosta on his latest endeavour.

Peele previously weaved narratives shining a light on racial injustice with ‘Get Out’ and the musical components and startling sounds were on point throughout. In ‘Us’  the ‘Teathered Remix’ of ‘I Got 5 On It‘ blares out in the classroom fight scene and this re-appropriation of a classic sound to fit a surrealistic moment is replicated in a trailer for ‘Candyman’.

Released earlier this year, the teaser features Destiny’s Child’s anthemic cut ‘Say My Name’.  Wafting like a light smoke in the background as the cast follow the ritual of saying the supernatural killer’s name in the mirror.

The film looks set to have similar undertones, with the trailer using puppets to highlight police brutality, while the film is grounded in a Chicago neighbourhood that is suffering from widespread gentrification.

‘Candyman’ is set for release September 25.
