Louis Theroux explores America’s prescription painkiller addiction in new documentary

‘Dark States – Heroin Town’ is the first of three new Louis Theroux documentaries set to air on BBC Two before the end of the year.

The one-hour long episode is based in Huntington, West Virginia known to many as the ground zero of America’s heroin epidemic.

Louis will meet the community and emergency service workers on the ground to investigate why, “for the first time in over two decades, life expectancy in the US is declining – largely attributed to the rise in fatal heroin overdoses”.

According to the BBC website, the crackdown on availability of prescription medication has seen people turning to heroin, the cheaper, stronger and less scarce option.

Later in the year Louis will tackle the issues of sex trafficking in Houston and murder in Milwaukee.

Heroin Town airs on Sunday October 8 on BBC Two.

Here’s a clip from one of the last times Louis visited an American community affected by drugs.
