MuRli and Gemma Dunleavy team up on ‘Odyssey’

Words: Dylan Murphy

It’s the first single from MuRli’s forthcoming EP The Sky Has Windows.

There’s a growing trend of artists shunning a New Music Friday release date in favour of a mid week drop in recent months and we’re here for it. It avoids the pitfalls of being lost to an avalanche of cuts vying for the same playlist spots as the weekend kicks in and if it’s a big single it’s given the room it needs to breath.

With all that in mind, it’s the perfect time to get a collaborative track from two of Ireland’s heaviest hitters. MuRli and Gemma Dunleavy have joined forces on ‘Odyssey’ ahead of the release of MuRli’s forthcoming EP The Sky Has Windows. The cut sees the pair weave in and out over production from Cork’s Boku that’s stabbing bass shares DNA with some of the biggest early hits from Hudson Mohawk.

‘Odyssey’ marks MuRli’s his first solo release since last year’s Till The Wheels Fall Off EP and highlights his ability to switch up his flows with ease over whatever beat comes his way.

Speaking on the track MuRli says, “I wrote this song to motivate myself on one of those tough lockdown mornings. Ian (Boku) sent me the beat and I just had it playing in the background, and approached it as if I was freestyling. I needed an outlet and it was the perfect beat to get it all out of me. When we had the opportunity to go to the studio again, thanks to the Dept. of Culture’s MISP funding, we invited a couple of musician friends along, and that’s where Gemma came in and just knocked it out the park.”
