New bank holiday and Healthcare workers to receive €1000 bonus

Words: Dylan Murphy

The March 18 bank holiday will remain a one-off in 2022, with it moving to early February from 2023 onwards as part of plan to recognise efforts of workers through the pandemic.

Today, it’s been revealed that the government are set to introduce a new bank holiday to recognise the dedication of public healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Those who worked onsite in clinical environments exposed to the virus will also receive a tax-free bonus of 1,000 euro. This is expected to include healthcare workers stationed in nursing homes and hospices.

Under the plan that was passed, the additional public holiday will take place on March 18, and commemorative events for those who passed away will take place on March 19 and 20.

Also announced was a new bank holiday in February that will come into effect from next year. Leo Varadkar commented this afternoon that the ‘Imbolg/Lá Fhéile Bríde’ holiday will be on the first Monday of February from 2023. It is the first public holiday named for a woman.
