Life sentence on your phone anyone?
Students could spend up to a quarter of their lives glued to their phones if current habits continue according to new research.
The study, carried out by screen-time support group Fluid Focus, found that the average student spends five and a half hours a day on their phone, which could add up to 25 years over a lifetime. Among the heaviest users (those on their phones for nine hours or more daily), that figure jumps to an astonishing 41 years.
The survey tracked phone use among over 2,800 students across secondary schools, colleges, and universities in the UK. Screen time increased with age, with university students averaging more than six hours daily, primarily on social media, messaging, and streaming apps. 68% of students admitted their phone use was hurting their academic performance. Around 40% said they checked their phone at least every 10 minutes while studying.
Most students also reported that their phone was both the first and last thing they looked at each day.
