These Irish Icons Are Getting Immortalised As Stamps

The limited edition stamps are available online or in selected post offices and online from today, September 12th.

In 2023, Ireland lost some of our finest artists, Séamus Begley one of Ireland’s most beloved accordion players, frontman of the Dublin band Aslan, Christy Dignam, Shane MacGowan of The Pogues and the legendary Sinéad O’Connor to name just a few. To celebrate these iconic Irish voices, An Post are releasing a set of four commemorative stamps honouring the artists. These four artists were pivotal in shaping the Irish music scene and left a lasting impact on the country’s cultural identity.

The collection features four black-and-white portrait stamps, designed by Shaughn McGrath, that capture the strength, vulnerability, and humanity of each artist. Each stamp portrays the musician’s eyes and hands, symbolic of the way they touched the world through their craft.

Begley and Dignam appear on the two ‘N’ stamps, which are for national postage, while MacGowan and O’Connor are featured on the two ‘W’ stamps, designed for international mailing. The stamps are available for purchase online and in selected post offices across Ireland.

This collection serves as a celebration of the legacies these artists have left behind, immortalising their contributions to Irish music and culture for generations to come.
