This Exhibition Explores What Consumerism is Doing To Your Identity

The event will run from the 20th to the 26th of August, from 12pm to 5pm daily at our Pearse Street Pop Up
Asha Murray is bringing ‘The Middle Aisle’, a week-long pop-up art exhibition, to our very own G.A.S HQ on 34 Pearse Street. The exhibition examines issues of overconsumption and consumerism in today’s climate. Specifically, the exhibition will focus on overconsumption, consumerism and its impacts on our identities, relationships, and dynamics within the world and the spaces we exist in.
You can expect a tactile dreamscape of wool tufted shopping items and surreal experimental films which will be exhibited alongside each other to create an emotive installation to walk through. The event will run from the 20th to the 26th of August, from 12pm to 5pm daily.
“In terms of what to take away from my work, I would like audiences to consider how the act of mindless buying is shaping us,” Murray tells District. “Perhaps to be more mindful and conscious of our overconsumption in this current climate we’re living in. How is it fulfilling us? And how does it affect us and the world around us? What are the negative impacts that overconsumption creates? How can it permeate our dynamics in life, our jobs, our relationships, and our overall well-being?”

We are incredibly excited to have Asha Murray in the space. Her work is always focussed on our lived experiences, explored through a feminist lens which allows her to question our embedded social constructs surrounding gender roles and identity.
The main medium of Murray’s work is experimental film, sculpture and wool tufting, which is a punch-needle wool technique to create a soft textile sculpture.
However, this isn’t simply an exhibition. Aside from the chance to see Murray’s work up close, there will be an artist talk on Tuesday the 25th at 7pm, and even a chance to become part of the exhibition dressed as your favourite shop item during the karaoke performance piece on Saturday the 22nd from 6pm-9pm.
