THISISPOPBABY’s New Show Combines Club Culture With Traditional Ireland

Internationally acclaimed Irish production company, THISISPOPBABY, have announced their return to home soil, with their award-winning theatrical creation, WAKE set to show in March of next year.

THISISPOPBABY have announced the return of their greatest endeavour to date, combining Irish club culture with the everpresent Irish traditions. Created by Jennifer Jennings, Phillip McMahon and Niall Sweeney, the performance draws on the last rites and processes of the Irish funeral wake. The show sees dancers, aerialists, electronic music performers as well as trad musicians who will display a merging of the two faces of Ireland.

As part of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, the show’s three-week run builds off the 2022 success that the pilot performances saw at Dublin Fringe Festival. Garnering the Judges’ Special Award and the Best Performer Award has propelled the show to being rated five stars by a variety of outlets including the Irish Times and The Arts Review.

A full band is set to be united with a litany of live performers to create the chaotic experience which is WAKE. Combining samples from 90s dance music with Irishisms and tongue-in-cheek perspectives on home culture, the show has been dubbed “Riverdance for the Club Queen”.

The three weeks of exhibition gives a platform to some of the most impressive performing artists in Ireland. Creating a sense of organised chaos, the show distorts the image of Irish culture by injecting a dose of much-needed glitz.

The performance draws on the success of the producer’s previous work, RIOT. The glitzy politically charged brainchild of THISISPOPBABY, breaking box office records and embarking on a world tour. Hitting New York, Melbourne, Toronto, the success of RIOT paved the way for WAKE.

Tickets go on sale this Friday 10 November. To grab a ticket to the show’s run, which spans from 6-23 March, click here.
