Watch the opening scene from Studio Ghibli’s ‘Earwig and the Witch’

Words: Dylan Murphy

In the new teaser, the film studio has swapped their trademark style with CGI and fans are split.

At the tail end of 2020, Studio Ghibli shared the first trailer for Earwig and the Witch. Rather than the trademark aesthetic that admirers around the world have grown to love, the film studio opted for 3D CGI animation.

Directed by Studio Ghibli founder Haya Miyazaki’s son Goro, It was met by raised eyebrows and subsequent complaints on the timeline. Now, they’ve shared the opening scene from the film which sees Earwig glide down a highway on the back of a motorbike driven by her mother, who is voiced by Kacey Musgraves. She is then left at ‘St Morwald’s Home For Children’ wth a cassette tape.

The official synopsis for the film reads:

“Growing up in an orphanage in the British countryside, Earwig has no idea that her mother had magical powers. Her life changes dramatically when a strange couple takes her in, and she is forced to live with a selfish witch.”

Earwig and the Witch will be available to stream on HBO Max from February 5.
