Anyone who took music in school should remember the difference between their major and minor scales: a quick refresh is major = happy, minor = sad.
We stumbled upon this playlist of songs reworked from major into minor or vice versa, and there’s some real gems amongst the playlist. Red Hot Chili Peppers’ ‘Californication’ in a major key turns the song into a sweet pop number.
While ‘Careless Whisper’ in a major key saps out all of the melancholy and emotion from the original.
NPR put together a nice little interview a few years back with Oleg Berg, the Youtuber who’s responsible for many of these musical conversions. They also interviewed Rob Kapilow, a composer and music scholar, who tapped into some of the science behind the warped recordings, and why they mess around with our heads.
