Here Are The Irish Photos That Won Sony’s Prestigious World Photo Competition

Every year, Sony searches for the most stunning photos taken in various areas of the creative sectors and awards the most poignant the coveted title of “Photo of the Year”. This year, two photographs have seen success with roots in Ireland, whether it be those behind the lens or those in front. Here’s some love to our Irish nominees.

Rhi-Entry

Rhiannon Adam

Rhiannon Adam – Rhi-Entry

Cork-born photographer, Rhiannon Adam has been a trailblazer for Irish women and the LGBTQ+ community. In 2021, she was selected for the dearMoon mission, a project which would see seven creatives join a crew to orbit the moon. Adam was selected from over one million applicants and spent over three years training for the journey, which would result in her being the first Irish-born person to travel to space. In 2024, the trip was cancelled due to broken promises from SpaceX, her photo series ‘Rhi-entry’, “Stands as a shrine to lost dreams and an urgent call for alternative voices in the space industry”

Divided Youth of Belfast

Toby Binder

German photographer, Toby Binder, captured young people in Belfast, focusing on the normality of the diving wall and adolescence in Belfast. The series shows the intergenerational trauma which has been passed down through the troubles, manifesting physically in the modern streets of the city in The North.

Enda Burke – Special K Nun
