The iPod has been officially discontinued

Words: Eva O’Beirne

First released in the same year of “It Wasn’t Me” and “Independent Woman, Pt. 1”, the iPod has been discontinued after 21 years on the market.

The iPod was released in 2001, and was the first MP3 player capable of storing 1,000 songs. Aside from the Touch, versions included the iPod mini, iPod Nano, and iPod Shuffle.

The most recent version of the device, the iPod Touch, has not been updated since 2019 – Apple has said it would continue to sell the Touch, the only generation of the iPod still on sale, “while supplies last”.

Apple has stated the “spirit of iPod” lives on in its lineup of products including iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and its HomePod smart speaker. It has been stated many times that without the iPod, we wouldn’t have the same podcast culture that exists today.
