Affogato crush on you
We’ve noticed a lot of cafes and restaurants around Dublin have rolled out the red carpet for affogatos this Summer. This could be down to the onset of ridiculously sunny weather after months of never being two paces away from an Aeropress during lockdown, which has made us all dehydrated caffeine addicts. The pull of an affogato is easy to understand, iconic Italian dessert that marries coffee with vanilla ice cream, into a rapidly melting collection of delicious goo. There’s nothing more continental than ordering one, and frantically gobbling it down before it completely melts. As an ode to this season’s trendiest desserts, we have collected a list of some of our favourites around the city
Coffee specialists Two Beans have been slinging affogatos out of their spot in Dún Laoghaire for quite a while now. Using proper vanilla ice cream the coffee servers drown it in a single-origin espresso. You can find Two Beans in Dún Laoghaire’s 11 George’s Street Lower, follow them on Instagram for more information.
One of the great things about Brasserie Sixty6’s take on an affogato looks to all intents and purposes like a McDonald’s chocolate sundae (rip). Brasserie Sixty6’s affogato definitely tastes ten times better than the golden arches one, made with pot fresh espresso and layered with their soft serve. You can find Brasserie Sixty6 on 66-67 South Great George’s Street, visit their Instagram account for more information.
One of the city’s new Summer openers is Arnie’s in Monkstown. The dedicated ice cream shop are putting their new 99 machine to good use, by making some mean looking affogato soft serves. You can find Arnie’s in Monkstown’s 17A Monkstown Cresent, follow them on Instagram for more information.
The location of the Pheonix Cafe in the actual Phoenix Park is hard to top, just off the park’s main thoroughfare. Their take on an affogato looks particularly nice, swirling coffee amongst smooth AF soft serve. The ice cream is in a nice portable container so it’s perfect to grab and go for a wander around the park with. You can find the Pheonix Cafe in Dublin 8’s Ashtown Castle, Nunciature Road, Phoenix Park, follow them on Instagram for more information.
Those two boiiis have used vanilla ice cream from Co. Cork, splashed some Root and Branch Coffee seasonal espresso overhead and have given customers the option to add homemade caramel sauce, roasted almonds or dark chocolate nut crunch to luxe the affogato up. You can find Two Boys Brew in Dublin 7’s 375 North Circular Road, Phibsborough, follow them on Instagram for more information.
Pizza-slingers Coke Lane Pizza know the suss and rolled out an affogato as their new summer dessert. Opting for a classic affogato set up, Coke Lane Pizza allow customers to pour the espresso poured over Bourbon vanilla ice cream. You can find Coke Lane Pizza in Lucky’s on Meath Street and in Rialto’s The Circular, follow them on Instagram for more information.
The Grove Road cafe may have created the perfect treat for a sunny summer evening, a dulce de leche affogato. Using a dulce de leche and vanilla ice cream base, the Roasted Brown double espresso is poured over then topped with a toasted coconut and walnut crumb. The best part of affogato is the speed at which it has to be eaten before it melts. Luckily Grove Road is a stone’s throw from the canal, where there’s plenty of spots to perch and gobble the affogato in two seconds flat. You can find Grove Road at yes you guessed it on Grove Road, Rathmines, follow them on Instagram for more information.
