Irish Gig of the Week: Smino

Words: Dray Morgan

Jack Daniel’s and District share an authentic love for music culture and we thought who better to team up with to celebrate the best new gigs. Every week, we’re handpicking the must-attend show in the capital, ranging from underground rappers in dimly lit rooms to rising stars on sold-out tours.

Neo-Soul rap artist and frequent collaborator with producer Monte Booker, Smino, is set to play a sold out show at the Button Factory. Straight off of a collaborative tour with Dreamville artist JID, he will be set to hit Dublin solo at the end of April.

Building upon the success of his other two projects, the Zero Fatigue, collective member commences his European leg of the ‘Luv 4 Rent’ album tour. The record reached No. 50 in the Billboard 200, Smino’s highest placement of his career.

In addition to his participation in Zero Fatigue, Smino has recently had close creative ties with JID and Guapdad4000 under the title Zoink Gang, as well as Saba and Noname culminating in the group Ghetto Stage

The record contains standout tracks such as ’90 Proof’ featuring hip hop icon J.Cole which was accompanied by a playful music video to mirror Smino’s signature sound.

Since his debut album ‘blkswn’ in 2017, Smino has garnered a large underground following which seems to be transitioning to a bigger stage with his more recent work. The hit ‘Wild Irish Roses’ and the title track ‘blkswn’ saw early success which was only developed with his further records. The Dublin date is the penultimate show of the EU tour which sees performances in the UK, Netherlands and Italy.

Smino will be headlining the Button Factory on 27 April. Tickets start at 22.90 euro
